Xander Harris / Dylan Ettinger split - The Driver / Tipoff (Moon Glyph, 2012)

Xander Harris / Dylan Ettinger - The Driver / Tipoff
Moon Glyph 2012

This release is a split 7” between Xander Harris, a synth project by Justin Sweatt from Austin, Texas, and another synth musician named Dylan Ettinger from Bloomington, Indiana. “The Driver”, by Xander Harris, features a rather upbeat, danc-y rhythm and percussion that sounds like both drum machine and drum set are being used. Upon a closer listen you can hear a good amount of auxiliary percussion like wood blocks, bells, etc. In the beginning of the song there is a glittery synth loop along with the percussion playing a short melody that sort of becomes drowned out by more drone-y, but melodic, new age-y synths. After this slow melody, a pretty groovy, 80’s kind of melody enters. Totally suspenseful, action movie feeling. Let’s just say I can see why it’s called “The Driver.” In comparison, “Tipoff”, by Dylan Ettinger, doesn’t incorporate any drums or percussion and the rhythm is a bit more laid back or not quite as intense. However, it is equally synth driven, also having a similar new age kind of timbre. The song features layers of synths, with the main melody consisting of a minimal, repeating melody supported by more bass-y and drone parts.
